Contact Your Legislators
Making Calls
During the legislative session, you may contact your state senator at 501-682-2902. House members can be reached at 501-682-6211. These numbers will allow you to leave messages for your members. Since the state legislature meets for only three months every other year, however, you may want to reach members while they are out of session and back at home.
When calling the House or Senate switchboards to leave a message for your legislator, follow these simple steps:
-
Identify the legislator for whom you are leaving a message;
-
Give your name, organization you represent and home town from which you are calling;
-
Explain why you are calling (to support/oppose a House bill or Senate bill);
-
Politely request that the message be given to your House/Senate member or that your call be returned;
-
Thank the person taking the call for his or her time.
Remember that during legislative sessions, members generally begin their work at the Arkansas State Capitol mid-day Monday and finish up by mid-day Friday so they can return home during the weekend. This timeframe gives legislators an opportunity to visit with constituents about important issues.
Writing Letters
When writing to a legislator, it's most effective to keep your letter short and to the point.
-
Put your name, address and phone number at the top;
-
Explain your position on the issue;
-
Personalize the letter to make an impact on the member. Members are not affected by mass-generated form letters;
-
Address your letter in the following manner:
State Senator (Full name)
320 State Capitol Building
Little Rock, AR 72201
State Representative (Full name)
350 State Capitol Building
Little Rock, AR 72201
