Little Rock, Ark. (April 20, 2012) — P. Allen Smith, award-winning designer, gardening and lifestyle expert, will help Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield promote healthy eating and exercise through a free, family event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, at the ArkansasBlue insurance store located at Shackleford Crossings Shopping Center, Little Rock.
At the “Eat. Plant. Dance. Salsa!” party, Smith will demonstrate how to plant a container garden with all the vegetables and herbs needed for making salsa, a healthy snack alternative. Then, Allen will demonstrate how to make his famous fresh salsa recipe.
Also featured at the event will be local, professional dancers from Arthur Murray Dance Studio in North Little Rock , who will demonstrate and teach salsa dancing. In addition, Eli Pierce, a 10-year old student from White Hall, will perform salsa dancing.
“I am thrilled about working with Arkansas Blue Cross,” said Smith. “It’s a great fit because the ‘healthy living’ messaging is right on point with how I feel about healthy eating and activity.” There is nothing like nutritious, home-grown fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, eggs and meat of all kinds. My salsa family recipe uses easy-to-grow vegetables that you can plant in a container. You don’t even need a garden.
We’ll have healthy eating covered and the professional dancers will punctuate this party with a fun activity for everyone to enjoy.”
“’Eat. Plant. Dance. Salsa!’ will be a great party for the entire family and a chance for parents and children to learn a little about gardening and good nutrition, get some fun gifts and work in a workout all in one stop,” said Sara Harris, team lead at ArkansasBlue. “We are so excited to have Allen coming to meet our members and neighbors. Once he teaches you how to assemble a salsa container garden at the event, you can plant one at home, watch it grow throughout the summer and harvest it for a tasty treat.
“The Arthur Murray dancers and Eli are great performers and teachers and will demonstrate how dancing can be a great activity to introduce into your exercise routine. We also will have fabulous prizes for guests to register to win, including two of Allen’s books and the container gardens he creates and a food processor, compliments of JCPenney and gift baskets of all kinds. Plus, we will give away maracas to the kids and a kitchen cutting mat to parents while supplies last.”
Wordsworth Books will be onsite for guests who would like to purchase Smith’s gardening or cook books. Following Smith’s demonstrations at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m, Smith will sign books for guests.
Guests who “like” the Mother Hood — an online community for moms, cared for by Arkansas Blue Cross — on Facebook® can print out a special voucher and bring it to the salsa party to receive a collapsible water bottle. “Check in” on Facebook or through other social media apps while you are at the salsa party and win another fun prize.
“This is a great family-friendly event to get your Saturday-before-Cinco de Mayo off to a great start,” said Harris. “Everyone is invited to come out and ‘Eat. Plant. Dance. Salsa!’”
