What do you need when you go crib shopping? A ruler!

As a parent, you want to make sure both you and your baby can sleep easy. And, by making sure your baby's crib is as safe as possible, those few hours of sleep you get each night will be much more restful.

So, when you get ready to go crib shopping, grab your wallet and your ruler and follow these simple safety tips:

  1. Choose a crib with bars no more than 2 3/8 inches apart. If the space between the bars is too wide, your baby could slip through.
  2. The crib should not have corner posts that stick up. Corner posts can be "catchpoints" for articles of clothing.
  3. The mattress should fit securely against the sides of the crib. No more than two fingers should fit between the mattress and the side of the crib. Place rolled towels between the mattress and the crib if the mattress is too small.
  4. When your baby can push up, you should remove bumpers, pillows and toys from the crib including toys that are strung across the crib or playpen.
