Job Summary
The Instructional Media Developer (IMD) is accountable for the research, evaluation, development, testing, and maintenance of instructional media and internal information related to the BlueAdvantage education and employee development business initiatives.  Each IMD on the Education & Development team assumes a primary leadership role in at least one of the following responsibilities:

• Serve as project leader and developer in the design and delivery of interactive on-line learning modules, videos, and other multimedia materials.
• Serve as system administrator and web developer for the BlueAdvantage intranet site.
• Serve as system administrator and web developer for the BlueAdvantage University intranet site.

Nature & Scope
Environment
The IMD reports directly to the Manager of Education & Development.  This position supports all aspects of BlueAdvantage instructional media and communication, working with management and staff to disseminate information necessary for the smooth operation of business with a focus on employee education and development.  The IMD leads and participates in projects and workgroups that support the business objectives and goals of BlueAdvantage and strives to produce media and documentation that enhance the education and development of employees.

Workflow
Work assignments are typically generated by requests from management.  This position will also independently initiate projects that positively enhance the employee education and development objectives for BlueAdvantage.  Requests for assistance are also received by coordinators, trainers, supervisors, or others within the organization.

Guidance
This position functions under the direction of the Manager of Education & Development regarding projects related to employee education, employee development and training documentation.  The IMD is expected to perform responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Challenges
The major challenge of this position is to develop quality instructional media and information that positively impacts the education and development goals for BlueAdvantage.  Meeting aggressive project deadlines and developing multimedia that is creative, timely, accurate, and comprehensive is also a challenging aspect of this position.  The IMD routinely works on multiple projects simultaneously and must respond quickly to urgent requests for assistance.  

Interfaces
Principal contacts within the organization include management, coordinators, supervisors, trainers, analysts, and operations staff.

Authority
Authority to make decisions regarding the development, design, and delivery of instructional media and internal business communication rests largely with the IMD in response to the priorities and deadlines negotiated with management and internal customers.


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

Strong proficiency in the following software applications:
Adobe software including Acrobat Professional, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Elements, and Flash
Articulate, Articulate Storyline, and Captivate authoring software
PaintShop Pro (or other professional photo editing software)
Microsoft Visio (or other flowchart software)
Microsoft Excel


Strong proficiency in project management and ability to lead projects independently utilizing the BlueAdvantage project management process.
Basic knowledge and experience with HTML or a site development tool such as Dreamweaver.
Proficiency in the design and development of on-line learning modules.
Proficiency using digital photography, video and sound equipment.
Proficiency in planning video shoots and editing video.
Research skills, including investigative, interview, and analytical capabilities.
Knowledge of current technical writing practices, graphic design, layout, document design, and web design.
Strong planning, project management, time management, and organizational skills.
Exceptional writing, editing, and grammatical skills.
Ability to establish goals and objectives and plan methods to achieve these goals.
Ability to analyze a problem and develop a solution.

Familiarity with CSW, AMISYS Advance, AHIN, and other enterprise applications.


Minimum Job Requirements

Level 1

  • Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or related field.
  • Experience must be in instructional design, training, technical writing, video editing or related media development field.
  • Experience may be substituted with a Master's Degree in Instructional Design if a portfolio of work products can be provided that includes a variety of e-learning, instructional media, and/or technical writing samples.

Note:  For applicants without a Bachelor's degree, experience as an Instructional Designer, E-Learning Developer, Trainer, Video Editor or equivalent will satisfy education requirement for degree; also must submit a portfolio of work.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word 2007 or later
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 or later.
  • Basic proficiency in skills, knowledge & abilities required for the position.

Level 2

  •  Master's degree in Instructional Design, Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or related field and  experience; or Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or related field and experience.
  • Experience must be in instructional design, training, technical writing, video editing or related media development field.

Level 3

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES OR ACCOUNTABILITIES (Essential Functions of Job)
Instructional Media
       Develop and maintain PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and other materials for training classes, BlueAdvantage University, My Blue Path, and other employee education and development initiatives.
Develop resource material for the BlueAdvantage intranet home page and other parts of the site.
Develop, test, and maintain traditional and computer-based media, including photos, graphics, audio, video, CD-ROM, etc.

E-Learning and Videos
Work with trainers, analysts, and other subject matter experts to outline and create the content to include in the development of online learning modules and interactive learning games.
Create storyboards for online courses.
Write narratives to use as audio/video scripts.
Plan and film video shoots; edit videos utilizing video and sound editing software.
Design, edit, test, and maintain online learning modules and exams utilizing various authoring software.

Intranet
Serve as system administrator, content manager, writer/designer, and editor of the BlueAdvantage intranet site.
Write, design, edit, manage, and maintain all aspects of the BlueAdvantage intranet sites (e.g., BlueAdvantage Encyclopedia, directories, and repositories).
Work with BlueAdvantage staff and Web team as needed to continuously improve the functionality and usability of internal web-based communication.

BlueAdvantage University
Serve as system administrator, content manager, writer/designer, and editor of the BlueAdvantage University intranet site.
Write, design, edit, manage, and maintain all aspects of the BlueAdvantage University intranet site.
Work with BlueAdvantage staff and Web team as needed to continuously improve the functionality and usability of internal web-based communication.



Additional Job Functions
Lead and/or participate on project teams to facilitate meeting BlueAdvantage’s business plan/goals.
Assist management and supervisors with presentations and various business projects.
Design flyers, posters, and other communications materials for training or special projects.
Assist with development and maintenance of BlueAdvantage internal and external documentation.
Consult with other enterprise divisions concerning information development, web development, and instructional media issues.
Create and maintain digital storage of all BlueAdvantage documentation and media.
Serve as photographer/videographer at special events and training sessions, as needed.
Other duties as needed to meet customers’ needs.
