Job Summary
The Instructional Media Developer (IMD) is accountable for the research, evaluation, development, and testing of instructional media and training materials developed to support the Internal Operations education and employee development initiatives.

The IMD serves as an expert in the use of graphic design to enhance learning and retention in both the classroom and through online learning.  This position must be proficient in the development of interactive online learning modules and simulations, videos, audio recordings, and other multimedia materials.


Nature & Scope
Environment
The IMD reports directly to the Director of Training & Staff Development.  This position supports all aspects of training and instructional media developed and used by the Training & Staff Development (T&SD) team.  The IMD leads and participates in project teams that support the education and development initiatives in the Internal Operations area and other enterprise areas that are supported by the T&SD team.  This is accomplished by working directly with management and designated staff.

Workflow
Work assignments are typically generated by requests from management.  This position will also independently initiate projects that positively enhance employee education and development objectives in the Internal Operations area.  Requests for assistance are also received from coordinators, trainers, supervisors, and others within the organization.

Guidance
This position functions under the direction of the Director of Training & Staff Development regarding projects related to employee education and development.  The IMD is expected to perform responsibilities with minimal supervision.

Challenges
The major challenge of this position is to develop quality instructional media and training materials that positively impact the education and development objectives of the Internal Operations area and enterprise divisions supported by T&SD.  Meeting aggressive project deadlines and developing multimedia that is creative, timely, accurate, and comprehensive is also a challenging aspect of this position.  The IMD routinely works on multiple projects simultaneously and must respond quickly to urgent requests for assistance.

Interfaces
Principal contacts within the organization include management, coordinators, supervisors, trainers, analysts, and operations staff.

Authority
Authority to make decisions regarding the development, design, and delivery of instructional media rests largely with the IMD in response to the priorities and deadlines negotiated with management and internal customers.


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities


Strong proficiency in graphic design.
Strong proficiency in the following software applications:
Adobe software including Acrobat Professional, Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Premiere Elements, Flash, and After Effects.
Articulate, Articulate Storyline, and Captivate authoring software
PaintShop Pro (or other professional photo editing software)
Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio
Strong proficiency in project management and ability to lead projects independently utilizing the T&SD project management process.
Strong proficiency in the use of digital photography, video, and sound equipment.
Strong proficiency in planning video shoots and editing video.
Basic knowledge and experience with HTML or a site development tool such as Dreamweaver.
Strong proficiency in the design and development of online learning modules.
Research skills, including investigative, interview, and analytical capabilities.
Knowledge of current technical writing practices, graphic design, layout, document design, and web design.
Strong planning, time management and organizational skills.
Strong writing, editing, and grammatical skills.
Ability to establish goals and objectives and plan methods to achieve these goals.
Ability to analyze a problem and develop a solution.

Minimum Job Requirements

Level 1

Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or related field and experience.

Experience must be in instructional design, training, technical writing, video editing or related media development field.

Experience may be substituted with a Master's Degree in Instructional Design if a portfolio of work products can be provided that includes a variety of eLearning, instructional media, and/or technical writing samples.

Note: For applicants without a Bachelor's degree, experience as an Instructional Designer, ELearning Developer, Curriculum & Course Developer, Trainer, Video Editor or equivalent will satisfy education requirement for degree; also must submit a portfolio of work.

  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word 2007 or later, with experience.
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 or later, with experience.
  • Basic proficiency in skills, knowledge & abilities required for the position.

Level 2

Master's degree in Instructional Design, Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or related field and experience; or Bachelor's degree in Instructional Design, Technical Writing, English, Journalism, or related field and  experience.

  • Intermediate/Advanced skills in Microsoft Word 2007 or later, with experience.
  • Intermediate/Advanced skills in Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 or later, with experience.
  • Intermediate skills in at least one Adobe software application (such as InDesign, Illustrator or Flash) with experience.
  • Above average proficiency in skills, knowledge & abilities required for the position.
  • Demonstrated strengths in the competencies related to technical knowledge, initiative, planning, decision making, judgment, professionalism, and leadership. This will be determined based on observations from the immediate supervisor.
  • No oral or written warning within the past 6 months.

 

Level 3

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES OR ACCOUNTABILITIES (Essential Functions of Job)
Instructional Design and Media
Exhibit creativity and expertise in the use of graphic design to enhance classroom training, online learning, and other educational initiatives.
Design and maintain engaging PowerPoint presentations, handouts, and other materials for training classes and employee development initiatives.
Develop, test, and maintain media including photographs, graphics, audio, and video.
Assist Curriculum & Course Developers in the development of training curriculum.

ELearning and Videos
Work with trainers, analysts, and other subject matter experts to outline and create the content to include in the development of online learning modules, tutorials, interactive simulations, videos, etc.
Create storyboards and prototypes for online modules, tutorials, and simulations.
Write audio and video scripts.
Plan, film, and edit video.
Record and edit audio for call simulations, eLearning modules, and other online resources.
Design, edit, test, and maintain online learning modules, simulations, assessments, and other resources utilizing various authoring software.
Oversee and administer the online housing of eLearning modules, tutorials, and other resources.


Additional Job Functions
Lead and/or serve as a member of project teams that involve the creation of instructional media.
Assist management and supervisors with the development of presentations and various business projects.
Design print materials for training initiatives or special projects.
Serve as a consultant to other enterprise divisions concerning multimedia and instructional design.
Serve as a photographer/videographer at special events and training sessions, as needed.
Other duties as needed to meet customers’ needs which may include the development of Microsoft Access databases or facilitating classes.
