Job Summary
The Lead Midrange Administrator provides support for new and ongoing projects that involve the Infrastructure Planning Midrange Administration team. This position may be assigned to assist with the HP/UX, AIX or other Midrange Administration team and is responsible for planning, design, installation, training, support, and tuning, as well as project coordination.
The incumbent participates in research of new hardware and software products that provide solutions to corporate business problems. Additionally, as a member of the Midrange Administration team, the Lead Midrange Administrator ensures an efficient level of service to the Enterprise through effective, continual, and proactive monitoring and review of performance, utilization and capacity planning for the assigned midrange platform. This position is responsible for ensuring efficient, standards-based solutions to Enterprise business problems involving the HP/UX, AIX or other midrange system. The Lead Midrange Administrator reviews midrange system problem resolutions and assists in developing and monitoring appropriate server performance and availability standards. This position may also provide oversight, assistance and leadership to other Midrange Administration team members.

Nature & Scope
Environment
This position reports to the Midrange Administration Supervisor for the assigned midrange platform. The Midrange Administration teams are charged with performing the tasks associated with maintaining effective and efficient midrange systems management processes. This includes the procurement, installation, maintenance and monitoring of the assigned midrange servers. The Lead Midrange Administrator must maintain continuing education requirements, and may seek appropriate certifications for the assigned midrange system.

Workflow
The Lead Midrange Administrator assists other members of the Midrange Administration team in the completion of routine tasks, such as user-needs analysis, software and hardware installations, vendor product and service analysis, monitoring work progression, and participating in team meetings.

The functions of this position are self-initiated as post-design and implementation procedures require ongoing research and monitoring of user operations to ensure continued efficiency in operations. The Lead Midrange Administrator works closely with the Midrange Administration Supervisor in tracking and submitting project status and time reports.

Guidance
This position functions under the direction of the Midrange Administration Supervisor regarding projects related to the assigned midrange platform, and is guided by the visions and goals of the Enterprise. The incumbent is expected to perform position duties with minimal supervision.

Challenges
Supporting and maintaining a 24/7 operational status of the assigned midrange platform is essential. The greatest challenges of the Lead Midrange Administrator are accurately analyzing an internal business user’s current operation, identifying their short- and long-range technical business needs, and assisting as needed in installation of appropriate solutions which may consist of vendor supplied patches or upgrades, third-party software or both.

The incumbent is responsible for maintaining records, reports and standards as established by the Midrange Administration Supervisor. Continuous growth in knowledge of the organization and technological advancement is essential to the success of the Lead Midrange Administrator.

Interfaces
The Lead Midrange Administrator reports directly the Midrange Administration Supervisor and routinely interfaces with all ITI Division personnel, as well as outside operating system and/or software vendors to assist in the efficient use of Enterprise midrange platforms infrastructure and services. The incumbent may also be asked to serve on task forces and committees designed to enhance the use of the Enterprise midrange infrastructure.

Authority
The Lead Midrange Systems Administrator has the authority to analyze requirements and make recommendations to the Midrange Systems Administration Supervisor and internal business users on the procurement, installation, and use of midrange system hardware and software. This position is responsible for ensuring that efficient, standards-based midrange systems administration solutions to Enterprise business problems are implemented.

Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university (prefer degree in Computer Information Systems, Computer Science, etc.) with prior experience in computer systems, data operations or programming;

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES OR ACCOUNTABILITIES (Essential Functions of Job)
1. Assist other Midrange Administration team members and applications support in troubleshooting and problem resolution.

2. As needed, assist team members with maintenance, upgrades, modifications to applications, operating system and various utilities used to support them.

3. Monitor and report on the overall status of assigned midrange platform operating system and availability/functionality in relation to dependant application systems.

4. Provide assistance as needed with annual disaster recovery exercises.

5. Function as a task force or committee member as approved by the Director of Infrastructure Planning.

6. Participate in regular staff meetings with other Systems Administrators for the purposes of sharing information, expressing concerns and providing project status updates.

7. Provide assistance and input as needed for periodic internal and external audits of assigned midrange systems procedures and processes.

8. Develop comprehensive policy and procedure documentation for assigned Midrange Administration team.

9. Interface with outside vendors and consultants to ensure cost-effective midrange systems solutions.

10. Monitor ongoing projects, review pending projects and assist with individually scheduled tasks involving assigned Midrange Administration team and provide status reports to the Midrange Administration Supervisor.

11. Assist Midrange Administration Supervisor in administering fair, effective and consistent performance team evaluations.

12. Become knowledgeable of and adhere to ABCBS Information Systems standards and policies; and remain abreast of industry changes and enhancements.

13. Maintain continuing education requirements. May be required to obtain appropriate certifications for assigned midrange system.

14. Ensure that a cooperative and productive climate is maintained with other divisions within the Enterprise.
